The Perfect Child Overview
In The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry, Hannah and Christopher Bauer were moved by compassion to adopt Janie, a starved and underdeveloped girl believed to have been horribly abused by her mother. Even before the adoption was final, Hannah began to sense that Janie’s terrible behavior was not all a result of her past. Perhaps, Janie’s determination to get her own way played a role, too. When Hannah and Christopher learn the truth about the child they have adopted, their lives will never be the same. Themes in the novel include the brokenness of child protective services, the horrible reality of mental illness, and love for biological and adopted children.
