The Parisian Overview
A work of historical fiction set in early twentieth century France and Palestine, The Parisian is Isabella Hammad’s ode to two divergent and beautiful cultures, linking these worlds through her protagonist, Midhat. The novel travels with Midhat both along his physical journeys and the decades of his life, exploring WWI-era France and Hammad’s ancestral home of Palestine in the throes of its nationalist movements of the interwar period. Through this, Hammad explores themes of love, nationalism, and anticolonialism, as well as tensions between tradition and modernity and East and West.
