The Other Two (Short Story) Overview
“The Other Two” is a short story by Edith Wharton. In 1904, the story was published in a collection of some of Wharton’s stories. The narrative follows Mr. Waythorn, a successful finance manager who has recently married. His wife, Alice, has been married twice before. Both of her previous marriages ended in divorce. Soon after Mr. Waythorn marries Alice, unforeseen circumstances begin to draw Alice’s ex-husbands into certain aspects of the Waythorns’ lives. The story explores themes of marriage, patriarchy, and social tension.
