The Only Story Overview
The Only Story is a novel by Julian Barnes. It follows Paul Roberts, who is 19 years old during the 1960s. Paul is living in a suburban English town when he falls in love with a 48-year-old married woman named Susan Macleod. Unable to resist their love for one another, Paul and Susan pursue their relationship in secret. Eventually, they move away to live together. Though the relationship provides fulfillment, it is also the source of much suffering. The novel explores themes of love, fulfillment, suffering, and personal history.
