The Obelisk Gate Overview
The Obelisk Gate, by J.N. Jemisin, is the second book in the Broken Earth series. In the novel, Nassun undertakes the tasks of bringing home the moon and putting an end to the Seasons that have plagued the Stillness for more than ten thousand years. Meanwhile, in Castrima, Nassun's mother (Essun) takes a stand for the rights of orogenes, beings with supernatural abilities. Themes in the novel include the changes in society brought on by the Seasons, the hatred and fear expressed toward the orogenes, and Nassun’s coming of age.
