"The New Colossus" is an 1883 sonnet composed by American poet and novelist Emma Lazarus. Lazarus wrote her piece as part of a fundraising effort to speed along the construction of the Statue of Liberty (completed 3three years later, in 1886). Consequently, the sonnet is concerned above all with questions of freedom, oppression, and immigration to the American "Land of Dreams."
