The Murderer's Ape Overview
The Murderer's Ape, by Jakob Wegelius, is intended for the middle school audience. As such, it is the story of Sally Jones, an intelligent, literate, resourceful gorilla. Sally sets out to save her best friend, Chief Henry Koskela, from a prison sentence. Sally makes friends and earns the trust of people along the way. Then, she shares her story by writing it all down using an old typewriter. The main themes are Sally's effect on people, the life of a gorilla in a human world, and the necessity of hope.
