With the Việt Nam war as its backdrop, Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai’s The Mountains Sing tells the multigenerational story of the Trần family. The family narrative spans the French colonial occupation, the rise of the communist Viet Minh, the Việt Nam war, and present-day Việt Nam. Diệu Lan tells her granddaughter, Hương, her experience fleeing the Land Reform and rebuilding her life in Hà Nội as Hương comes of age during a turbulent and divisive time in history. Guided by Diệu Lan’s knowledge and experiences, Hương tries to make sense of war and how her family can heal from its violence as the novel deals with themes of war, family loyalty, trauma, fate, and motherhood.
