The Miniaturist is a historical novel set in seventeenth-century Amsterdam and exploring themes of oppression, intrigue, betrayal, and marriage. Following the life of 18-year-old Nella Brandt after her arranged marriage to the much-older Johannes Brandt, the narrative weaves symbolism and mystery into the plot via the gift of a miniature house that reflects Nella's own. As new additions arrive for the miniature home, Nella sees their resonance in the community around her as well as in herself and her perspective.
