The Midwife's Revolt Overview
Jodi Daynard's The Midwife's Revolt is the story of Elizabeth Boylston, a young midwife. Elizabeth is newly married and happily living on a farm outside Cambridge with her husband, Jeb, until he is killed at one of the first battles of the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth forms a close friendship with John and Abigail Adams who live nearby.
After Jeb's death, Elizabeth takes Martha Miller into her home as an apprentice. Elizabeth's sister-in-law, Eliza Boyston, also comes to live in the house. Eliza remains to give birth to an illegitimate mulatto son.
As Elizabeth navigates her way through a new romance, she experiences intriguing situations and many crises to find happiness. The main themes are the need for love and friendship, distrust, and the roles of women.
