In Nikki Erlick's novel The Measure, a series of mysterious boxes appears on the doorsteps of every adult worldwide. Each box contains a string, measuring the remaining duration of the recipient's life. Initially, the boxes inspire solidarity. However, only a week after their arrival, the strings become a ready source of disruption and division. Over the course of the novel, the eight primary characters, Nina, Maura, Ben, Amie, Jack, Javier, Hank, and Anthony must learn how to face the future their strings have dictated for them. The novel explores themes including hope, love, and connection.
