The Map of Salt and Stars Overview
Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar's novel, The Map of Salt and Stars, follows two distinct timelines. In 2011, Nour and her family return to Syria after their father’s death. To cope, Nour tells the story of Rawiya, a twelfth-century girl who disguises herself as a boy to become the apprentice of a legendary map maker al-Idrisi. Soon, however, the two stories collide as Nour’s family is forced to flee on the same path that Rawiya charged centuries ago. This novel focuses on family, ancestry, and the disruption caused by violence.
