The novel takes a real-life historical figure, Afong Moy, for its imaginative starting-point, inventing a line of descendants for her and exploring the connections between these women, from 1836 to 2086. Using a third-person point of view, the novel focuses mainly on Dorothy, a troubled poet coming to terms with her family history by means of experimental therapy. The novel engages with epigenetic theory and covers themes of memory, trauma, karma, and social injustice.
