Everything you need to understand or teach The Lilies (Poem).
Poet and linguistic anthropologist Karenne Wood's poem "The Lilies" was originally published in her 2001 collection Markings on Earth. In the poem, the speaker explores illness, mortality, and seeking solace in nature. Upon being possibly diagnosed with oral cancer, the speaker plants white lilies, knowing a year will pass before they bloom. The speaker then uses this imagery to communicate the changes that occur both in the earth and in her own body as a result of the cancer.
