The Lie Tree Overview
Frances Hardinge's novel The Lie Tree is the story of Faith Sunderly, whose father Erasmus is a famed natural scientist caught up in the midst of a scandal. Faith discovers that her father created an elaborate lie because he believes a plant, known as the Mendacity Tree, will reveal to him the truth about mankind's origins. When Erasmus is found dead, Faith creates a series of lies of her own in the hope the tree will reveal his killer. She quickly learns that people are willing to do anything for power and that she lacks the understanding of what motivates people. The novel's themes include the power of lies, the relationships between mothers and daughters, the inferiority of females, and coming of age.
