Shing Yin Khor's graphic novel The Legend of Auntie Po tells the story of a young Chinese American girl living and working at a Sierra Nevada logging camp in 1885. Mei is known throughout the camp for making the best pies and telling the best stories. Mei especially likes to share her tales about Auntie Po and her giant, blue buffalo Pei Pei with her friends. When Mei starts to experience difficult times at the camp, Auntie Po and Pei Pei start appearing to her. However, she soon learns that not even her invented gods can keep her from experiencing sadness and loss. The novel explores themes including friendship, family, and tradition.
