In Sonora Jha's novel The Laughter, first person narrator Oliver Harding is desperate to sleep with his colleague Ruhaba Khan. When her nephew Adil comes to live with her, Oliver tries to use Adil to gain Ruhaba's trust. However, when political conflicts break out on the university campus where Oliver and Ruhaba work, Oliver fears he will lose control of his identity and authority. Toggling between the past and the present throughout, the novel explores themes including prejudice, power, and desire.
