The Late Show Overview
Michael Connelly’s The Late Show follows LAPD Detective Renée Ballard as she works the night shift, a lonely, boring beat she’s been stuck with after filing an unsuccessful sexual harassment complaint against her former supervisor. Yet over the course of one night, Ballard lands two cases that will test her commitment to justice to the extreme: the brutal assault of a trans sex worker and a young waitress’ death in mass nightclub shooting. Ballard will have to overcome immense bureaucratic and misogynist obstacles in order to discover these women’s killers, and each clue she finds will lead her into greater and greater danger. The Late Show is a classic detective tale in a contemporary setting that confronts themes of corruption, betrayal, isolation, grief, and gender discrimination.
