Littleport, Maine is a seaside escape for the wealthy that is practically owned by the Loman family, for whom Avery Greer works. When Avery's best friend, Sadie Loman, is found dead on the beach in the summer of 2017, most people assume she committed suicide. Avery begins to suspect that Sadie's death was a homicide. Several people seem to blame or even be suspicious of Avery, including Detective Ben Collins and Sadie's brother Parker. When Avery starts digging deeper into the events surrounding Sadie's death, Avery discovers that she is at the core of a scandal long buried by the Lomans. While unraveling the mystery in the novel, Miranda covers themes like wealth and privilege, interchangeability and identity, and hiding the ugly truth in order to keep up appearances.
