Shafak’s young adult novel, The Island of the Missing Trees, tells the story of Ada’s parents, Defne and Kostas, who grew up during the 1970s in Cyprus. Its narration style alternates between third person omniscient to third person limited, from a fig tree’s point of view. The novel takes place in London, England and Nicosia, Cyprus. Shafak tackles, among others, themes of intergenerational trauma, communal violence, and familial love.
