The Island, by white South African playwright and activist Athol Fugard, explores the experiences of two Black men imprisoned during the apartheid era. As John and Winston prepare a presentation of the Ancient Greek play Antigone, they encounter parallels between their experiences and those of the play’s central character. The Island explores themes related to the nature and power of freedom, the nature of friendship, and the role of imagination in surviving violence and suffering.
