In Chloe Benjamin's sophomore novel The Immortalists, the narrative opens with a flashback of the four Gold children's visit to a fortune teller who lives not far from the Golds' apartment in New York City. Over the course of the novel, Simon, Klara, Daniel and Varya will each see their adult lives transformed as a result of the few moments spent in the company of the seer during their childhoods. Over the course of the novel, Benjamin depicts themes such as determinism, compassion, and the juxtaposition between art and science.
