The House of Doors Overview

The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng is a novel inspired by the real-life visit of the author W. Somerset Maugham to Penang in Malaysia in the 1920s. The novel imagines how Maugham discovered the stories that he included in the book he wrote after his visit, by exploring the life of the fictional Lesley Hamlyn and her involvement with the political cause of the Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat Sen. The House of Doors addresses the themes of fact versus fiction, infidelity, and colonialism.
