In Emma Cline's novel The Guest, Alex attaches herself to an elderly, wealthy man named Simon in an attempt to escape the troubles of her past. Summering with Simon on Long Island convinces her that she can hide from her mistakes and the people she has wronged. However, when Simon breaks up with her for crashing his car and embarrassing him at a party, Alex is thrown out into the unknown, unsure where to go or to whom she might turn.
