Rebecca Makkai's award-winning novel The Great Believers tells the stories of two friends living in Chicago during two different eras in time: 1985 and 2015. One protagonist is Yale, a University museum curator and member of the LBGTQ community, and Fiona, a friend of Yale’s trying to reconnect with her estranged daughter in Paris, while still dealing with the trauma caused by her brother Nico's death from AIDS. The Great Believers tackles themes such as memory, friendship, trust, fear and death.
