“The Golden Shovel” is a nonce poem, which later came to be known as the “golden shovel” form, by American poet Terrance Hayes. It originally appeared in his 2012 collection Lighthead. It’s told from the perspective of someone looking back on childhood memories alongside their father in a gritty urban environment. The poem is told through two contrasting cantos set ten years apart, examining the family’s downfall and the speaker’s loss of innocence.
