The Fountains of Silence Overview
In Ruta Sepetys' novel, The Fountains of Silence, Ana Morena is an employee at an elegant hotel when Daniel Matheson and his family visit Madrid in the summer of 1957. Ana and Daniel form an immediate connection. However, they are unable to act on their feelings. By the time that Daniel and his parents leave Madrid a few weeks later, Daniel's father (Martin) has closed an oil deal. Additionally, his parents have adopted a beautiful baby girl, Christina. Eighteen years later, Daniel accompanies Christina to visit Madrid where he renews friendships and realizes that he and Ana are still in love. Moreover, he discovers that Christina was one of many children stolen from their parents by a ruthless government and church officials. The novel's main themes are hope, love, and the pull of Spain.
