Kristin Harmel's novel The Forest of Vanishing Stars takes place in Europe with the majority of the action set during World War II. Acting on divine instruction, an old woman named Jerusza kidnaps a toddler whom she renames Yona. Jerusza believes she is saving the girl from her evil German parents and that Yona will do great things someday. Yona grows up learning how to survive in the forest. Eventually, she teaches Jewish refugees to do the same. The main themes are prejudice, the costs and benefits of relationships, mourning losses, survival, and choices.
