The Flood Girls Overview
Richard Fifield’s The Flood Girls is set in the tiny Montana town of Quinn. Focusing on the events of 1991 to 1992, along with flashbacks to ten years earlier, the novel focuses on three main characters: Laverna Flood, her daughter Rachel, and Rachel’s neighbor, 12-year-old Jake. At the beginning of the novel, Rachel has just returned to Quinn after nine years of hostility between her and her mother. Rachel, a recovering alcoholic, has come back to her hometown to make amends with her mother, and to live in her recently-deceased father’s trailer. She befriends her neighbor, Jake, a flamboyant pre-teen with a penchant for fashion and joins her mother’s softball team named the Flood Girls.
