The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen is about a Jewish girl named Hannah Stern who lives in New Rochelle, New York in the 1980’s. She has become bored and disinterested in her religion as a Passover Seder approaches. That night, Hannah is transported back in time and finds herself in a concentration camp where she endures many hardships inflicted on her by the Nazi soldiers. Upon returning home and back to reality, she realizes the horror that some of her family faced and starts to appreciate their sacrifice and religion.
