In the psychological thriller The Coworker by Freida McFadden, Natalie Farrell worries something terrible has happened when her typically prompt coworker, Dawn Schiff, is late for work. Natalie finds what appears to be the scene of a crime at Dawn’s house and quickly becomes the main suspect in Dawn’s murder. Natalie learns that Dawn was faking her death to punish Natalie who bullied Dawn’s childhood best friend to the point that the friend died by suicide. Natalie soon learns that Dawn has a secret that she has kept to herself about her disappearance. While that secret could put Dawn in jail, Natalie keeps Dawn’s secrets because Natalie has secrets of her own. Themes in the novel include bullying, suicide, and the art of using perception to manipulate a situation.
