The Cold Millions Overview
The Cold Millions is a historical novel by Jess Walter. The story includes fictional characters, as well as some actual historical figures. The protagonist is a 16-year-old boy named Ryan “Rye” Dolan. He and his older brother Gregory “Gig” Dolan arrive in Spokane, Washington in the year 1909. They observe growing tensions between the local police and labor unions. After attending a protest organized by a union, they become embroiled in the struggle between the union, the police, and a wealthy Spokane industrialist. The novel explores themes of activism, work, courage, violence, and altruism.
