The Buried Giant, by Kazuo Ishiguro, takes place after the war between the Britons and the Saxons. It is the story of Axl and Beatrice, an elderly Briton couple who leave their village on a quest to find a son they can barely remember. As their journey continues, its purpose grows to include discovering and destroying what has caused the loss of memory in everyone in the land. All the while, the characters must face the dilemma of wanting to restore memories which help define humans and their relationships versus letting memories that can cause ill-will and destruction rest.
