The Book of Night Women Overview
The Book of Night Women is a historical novel by Jamaican author Marlon James. The novel relates the story of a young mulatto slave named Lilith and six women who are plotting a rebellion in the 18th century. The narrative begins with Lilith’s birth in 1785 and continues through the rebellion. Through various experiences involving whippings, rape, moving from the estate on which she was born, and reading a book called Joseph Andrews, Lilith learns how to deal with her uncertainties and doubts about her place in life and to live on terms that work for both her and society. The Book of Night Women explores themes of corruption, identity, and the power of women.
