The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek Overview
Kim Richardson’s The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, a historical fiction novel, tells the story of Cussy Mary Carter, a Blue woman of Troublesome, Kentucky. Cussy Mary works as a librarian for the Pack Horse Librarian project, a Great Depression era WPA program. She delivers books, scrapbooks, and sometimes letters and news on mule, bringing joy and access to the outside world to folks otherwise secluded from it. However, her route is not devoid of danger as she makes her way through the Kentucky hills. This novel uses the themes of distrust of authority, grace, religion used as a threat, and explores the ties between families and books.
