Liesel Meminger is a young German girl growing up during WWII. She lives with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubberman, outside of Munich and learns to cope with the loss of a brother and the accompanying nightmares through reading. Hans is hiding Max, a young Jewish man who’s father saved Hans’ life in WWI, in the basement. Leisel and Max develop a friendship when Leisel realizes that Max suffers from nightmares too and they begin spending time reading together, cementing their bond and giving Leisel insight into the story that she may write some day: her own.
