Jack Livings' novel The Blizzard Party tells the story of first person narrator Hazel Saltwater's attempt to confront her husband Vik's passing. Instead of describing her relationship with him, or her experience with grief, Hazel sets out to rewrite her father's novel by the same name. She hopes her rendition will lend clarity to the confusing events from that one snowy night from 1978. However, the more she tries to insert her six-year-old self within the night's scenarios, the more peripheral she becomes. Through Hazel's attempts to reconcile herself with her own devastation, the author explores themes including memory, grief, and interconnection.
