The Black Kids Overview
Christina Hammonds Reed's Black Kids is a young adult novel set during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Ashley Bennett is 17, wealthy, and Black. She attends a prestigious private school and hangs out exclusively with her white friends. However, during the riots her sheltered life is shattered and she must come to terms with her identity and her complicated family history. The novel explores history, racism, childhood, mental health, and unity.
