Take My Hand Overview

In Dolen Perkins-Valdez's novel Take My Hand, first person narrator Civil Townsend sets out on a trip from Memphis to Montgomery, Alabama in order to revisit the places and people from her past. Throughout the journey, she reflects on her relationship with her former patients, Erica and India Williams, from her time working at a Montgomery clinic in 1973. Civil's reflections launch a complex examination of themes including shame, memory, and exploitation.
