Sunflower Sisters Overview
Martha Kelly's novel, Sunflower Sisters, takes place in the mid-1800s as America is torn by war and racial tension. The Woolsey family has been active in anti-slavery causes long before the war, and most of the members work to support the Northern cause once the war starts. Meanwhile, a young slave named Jemma dreams of freedom for herself and her family while her owner, Anne-May, struggles with the changing social and political climates. Jemma makes her way North and befriends Georgy Woolsey but is returned to slavery. With the war winding down, Georgy and her family continue their work while Jemma and her sister are reunited with their mother and other slaves from their plantation who have escaped slavery as well. The novel's main themes are the effects of war, the horrors of slavery, and the importance of family.
