Sonnet 130 (Shakespeare) Overview

Shakespeare's "Sonnet 106" is a Shakespearean sonnet published among his 154 sonnets in a 1609 folio by Thomas Thorpe. They are dedicated to "WH," usually thought to be the Earl of Pembroke. There are 13 surviving copies today. Most of the sonnets address themes of love. This sonnet, as with most of the later sonnets, is dedicated to a woman for whom the speaker has passionate, yet ambiguous feelings. This sonnet playfully reverses the tropes of love poetry, while still offering an affectionate description of an exceptional woman.
