Everything you need to understand or teach Song For a Whale by Lynne Kelly.
Lynne Kelly's Song for a Whale is a young-adult coming-of-age novel told from the first-person perspective of a Deaf 12-year-old named Iris. Iris learns of a whale named Blue 55 who cannot communicate with other whales because of the frequency of his call, and she becomes driven to find him and show him he is not alone, traveling around the United States to do so. The novel is set partially in Houston, where Iris lives, and partially on a cruise ship as it travels throughout Alaska as Iris and her grandmother search for Blue 55. Kelly tackles themes such as the disconnection that being Deaf causes, the world's lack of attention given to people with disabilities, and grief.
