Solo Overview
Written entirely in verse, Kwame Alexander’s Solo is a bildungsroman narrated from the first-person perspective of a 17-year-old musician named Blade, who searches for his biological mother in Africa after learning that he was adopted. The novel is set in both California and Ghana, where Alexander led cultural exchange delegations intended to increase literacy internationally. Amongst others, Solo tackles themes of family, gratitude, hope, and music.
