This novel for young adults is a story of same-sex first love, but with a twist: each of the lovers does not know who the other one is. As protagonist and narrator Simon struggles with his intensifying feelings for the mysterious, attractive, and compassionate “Blue”, he also struggles with the prospect and consequences of coming out as a young gay man in an unwelcoming environment (the Southern United States), with a loving and intrusive family, and a group of close but unpredictable friends. Eventually, Blue and Jacques reveal their identities to each other, and a universal story of first love (but with a same-sex twist) arrives at its happy ending.
