Sharks in the Time of Saviors Overview
Kawai Strong Washburn's debut novel, Sharks in the Time of Saviors, tells the evocative story of the Flores family and their individual and collective relationships with the supernatural world. After Malia and Augie Flores' second son, Noa, is delivered from drowning by a band of sharks, the family becomes convinced their son has a connection with the divine. His subsequent ability to heal people solidifies this suspicion. The novel traces the family's journey to understand, detach from, and reconcile themselves with Noa's gift, one another, and their Hawaiian homeland. Washburn's narrative explores themes of home, family, and self-discovery.
