Scissors (Short Story) Overview
In Karina Sainz Borgo's short story "Scissors," ever since the start of the Venezuelan economic crisis, Herminia, her daughter, Koralia, and granddaughter, Milagros, have begun crossing the border into neighboring Colombia for food. During one such journey, Herminia waits in a CĂșcuta park while her family runs errands. Throughout the afternoon, she sits in fear that her daughter and granddaughter might never return. Meanwhile, Koralia and Milagros take extreme measures to provide for their starving family. The short story explores themes including crossings, war, and hunger.
