Runner, by Robert Newton, is a novel for young adults. Set in Australia in the early 1900’s, it tells the story of a young man’s struggle to get himself and his family out of poverty. As it portrays the experiences of protagonist Charlie Feehan and his movement through a life transformed by both petty crime and deep personal loss, the narrative develops themes relating to the power of hope, the importance of making choices, and parent/child relationships.
