In Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning play entitled Ruined, a proprietress named Mama Nedi attempts to keep her bordello running smoothly amid the ever-increasing danger posed by the Second Congo War. As the battle rages ever closer and it becomes more difficult for Mama Nedi to preserve the neutrality in her bar/brothel, she and the other characters must decide upon their next course of action. Over the course of the play, Nottage includes themes such as betrayal, compassion, and oppression.
