Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark is a novel about stopping anger from turning into hate. The novel is set in the racially segregated South near the beginning of the second Ku Klux Klan. The protagonist of this first person narrative is Maryse, and she uses the pain of the slaves who came before her to help her fight against the forces of hate. She does this while trying to avoid being consumed by that hate herself. The novel deals with themes of, among others, vengeance, anger, discrimination, and sight.
