Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler is a novel about a week in the life of a middle-aged man, Micah Mortimer, as he comes to terms with his past relationships with women. The catalyst for this reckoning is the arrival of an ex-girlfriend's son who believes that Micah is his father. The novel paints a picture of Micah's past experiences, and how they have shaped his life into the routine and highly regimented form it takes in the present, along with the forces come to erode them. In doing so, Anne Tyler deals with themes of aging, relationships, and forgiveness, among others.
